The local Antwerp airport is generating more and more passengers every day. This resulted in more commercial flights with more passengers. The runaway was too short for the amount of planes, as well as the sizes of some of the planes that needed to land. The reason was a road linking Deurne to Mortsel. These are small villages in the suburbs of Antwerp.
It was decided that a tunnel needed to be constructed in order to make the runway that much longer. Due to the heavy traffic, GLASAL®-T was chosen as passive fire protective lining in the tunnel. It is a smooth surface panel, with easy maintenance and withstands the heavy traffic exhaust fumes as well as small stones chipping into the lining.
