During a fire event, steel loses its loadbearing capacity at a temperature in excess of 550°C. In light of this, structural steel protection needs to be specified to preserve the stability of the building during a fire. There are several common steel protection methods, including:

• vermiculite spray;
• intumescent coatings; and
• board encasement systems.
