A smoke management system is a crucial element in every fire protection plan. In case of fire, the ducting system extracts smoke and hot air from a compartment so occupants can escape safely. At the same time, the ducting system will prevent the spreading of the fire through the ventilation channels. This crucial part of fire protection will help to control the fire while the fire fighters evacuate people and combat the fire.
Studies and statistics show that the greatest threat to life in a fire-related incident is not burns but smoke inhalation. The smoke generated by the burning content of a building can be extremely hazardous due to soot and aerosol particles floating in the air, combined with invisible toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen cyanide. Smoke also obstructs light, reduces the visibility of escape signs, and makes it harder for occupants to find the escape route.
While the system's primarily goal is to protect people on their way to safety, it also helps to limit smoke and heat damage to the property and its content. The combination of both life and asset protection can help to lower insurance premiums and provide peace of mind that, should the worst happen, the building, and everything within it, is protected.
An effective smoke and ventilation management system is crucial in every large-scale building project. An architect or building engineer needs to consider the risk of fire and set up a plan to protect the building in such a way that people can be evacuated in time and the fire brigade can extinguish the fire.
The design objective of a smoke management system depends on its application. In a hospital environment, the system needs to extract the smoke as quickly as possible, protect the ventilation system and control the fire. In a large compartment, the focus will be on the reduction of temperature and on the protection of the escape route. Whatever the context, the goal is to maintain a tenable environment for long enough, so all occupants can safely leave the building.
