Promat has supplied fire protection solutions for the structural steel components of this major £675m retail and residential development.
A major factor in winning this contract was Promat’s ability to demonstrate supply chain efficiencies which would help reduce the overall carbon footprint and material costs of the project.
“The experience we have gained from working with Promat on other projects of this scale made them the clear choice for fire protection solutions.” Nick Yorke, Project Manager for R&S Driwall.
Over 150,000 m2 of Promat PROMATECT®-250 non-combustible board and Promat TD Board® mineral fibre board have been installed on the landmark St David's 2 extension project in the centre of Cardiff.
Effective protection is crucial for structural steel which can begin to lose its design margin of safety for load-bearing at temperatures around 550°C. Promat’s technical team worked closely with fire protection and drywall specialists R&S Driwall, and main contractors Bovis Lend Lease, to identify the most appropriate and robust fire protection system for this project.
Promat liaised with specialist distributor Sheffield Insulations to ensure all the materials were delivered to site in full loads from Sheffield Insulations’ Cardiff branch. Much of the material used in the project was also manufactured locally, which further reduced the environmental impact of the supply chain.
The 90,000m2 St David’s 2 development is an extension to the original St David’s shopping complex and houses numerous stores, cafes, bars, restaurants and luxury residential apartments, plus a new central library and various other public areas.
